Bedbugs in libraries

Check out this story from Missouri. Bedbugs have been found in the public library there, and it’s not the first time.

Honestly, this does happen, here in Vancouver and across the world. Bedbugs are a global problem, and this is one of the ways in which they spread. They can’t survive for long outside of human structures – not in the climate of the Lower Mainland, anyway – but they can travel on people and on items, such as books. This makes libraries a perennial problem, since their whole purpose is to circulate items throughout the population.

What can you do to ensure you don’t bring bed bugs back from the library? Check any books you borrow carefully. Bedbugs like to hide in the spines of books, so look there for any droppings – small black dots that look they were made by a marker pen. You might even see the bugs themselves – I have seen them in books, from time to time.
