Bugs for dinner!

A lot of people are squeamish about bugs in general, and the thought of actually eating them seems downright horrifying. I’ll admit, I’m one of those people. That’s not to say I haven’t tried, though. I once ate a BBQ-flavoured mealworm. It was….ok. Not terrible, but not something I’d recommend, either.

But as this story shows, the edible bug industry is growing. Many people believe that bugs may well be the food source of the future. High in protein, low in fat, and far less land and water intensive to farm than animals like cows and chickens, insects might be part of the answer to growing food distribution issues around the world. And of course, in large parts of the world, insects have been on the menu for a long, long time. It’s only in our European-influenced cuisine that they seem to have no place. Maybe that’s about to change…
